In Germany, secondary education leading to university (the Abitur) lasts 13 years (or an intensive 12-year Gymnasium). Because Pakistan’s Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC/FSc) represents 12 years of schooling, the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) requires Pakistani students to complete a 1-year preparatory college (Studienkolleg) and pass the university entrance assessment examination (Feststellungsprüfung / FSP) before entering a 3-year Bachelor’s degree. Students with completed A-Levels (with specific matching subject requirements) or who have completed 1 year of recognized university education in Pakistan can often qualify for direct undergraduate admission without Studienkolleg.

Under the modernized German Skilled Immigration Act (§16b AufenthG), international students from non-EU countries are legally permitted to work up to 140 full days (shifts over 4 hours) or 280 half days (shifts up to 4 hours) per calendar year without requiring permission from the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit). Alternatively, you may work up to 20 hours per week during the lecture semester and unlimited full-time hours during semester vacations. In addition, academic student assistant roles (HiWi jobs) inside universities do not count toward your 140-day limit.

Upon completing your Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Germany, you are eligible to apply for an 18-month post-study job seeker residence permit (§20 AufenthG). During these 18 months, you have unrestricted full-time work rights in any job. Once you secure qualified employment matching your degree earning the prevailing salary threshold, you can convert your permit directly inside Germany into an EU Blue Card (§18g) or skilled worker permit, leading to German Permanent Residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis) in as little as 21 months (with B1 German) or 27 months.

The blocked account is mandatory for self-funded students applying for Bachelor’s, Master’s, or preparatory courses. You are legally exempt from opening a blocked account only if you have an official full scholarship from a recognized funding organization (such as the DAAD, Erasmus+, or HEC), a formal letter of commitment with financial guarantee (§68 Verpflichtungserklärung) issued by a sponsor living in Germany, or an employment contract as a salaried PhD scientific researcher (TV-L E13 contract).
